Women could be headed to the front lines for the first time ever, thanks to a new move by the Marines.

In a groundbreaking shift, female leathernecks will soon be able to enroll in the Marine Corps’ Infantry Officers Corps, the school that trains Marines to become combat leaders. 

At the request of Congress and Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta, the Corps has launched a kind of pilot program to review the branch’s policy on women serving in combat roles, Marines spokesman Capt. Kevin Schultz told The Daily yesterday.

Starting next month, female Marines will be able to work in areas that have been off-limits to them, such as artillery, combat engineering, low-altitude air defense, amphibious assault and combat assault, Schultz said.
